Promoting social dialogue in an enlarged Europe

First of all it must be asserted that social dialogue forms an integral part of the acquis communautaire.

In view of this, the European Commission has established interprofessional social dialogue and, since 1998, a Communication has allowed for the creation of sectoral committees. Over 30 of these committees currently exist. EMCEF represents 5 of them: Chemical, Electricity, Extractive Industry, Gas, and the cross-sectoral Nepsi. The social dialogue in the paper sector is in preparation.

The advantage of these committees is that the social partners, employers and employees, have complete control over their functioning from a political point of view: content, debates, issues to be discussed, resolutions to be adopted. The European Commission is responsible for the logistics: reimbursement of expenses, provision of rooms and interpreters.

The statutory EMCEF social dialogue committee meets twice per year. The European Sectoral Social Dialogue Liaison Forum also meets several times a year.
