Action planned by the European trade unions against Unilever
Wednesday, October 10, 2007, 09:34 Hrs

In the past week, representatives of the EFFAT and EMCEF Secretariats have met in Brussels with member organizations from Germany, Netherlands, France, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and Poland, as well as, the steering committee of the Unilever EWC in Holland. The aim was to discuss a joint response by the trade unions and works councils to the announcement by Unilever on 02 August 2007 of cutting approximately 20,000 jobs worldwide - 10,000 to 12,000 of them in Europe.

Within the framework of the national reports, it became clear that practically all European Unilever-Companies in all sectors of Unilever, will be affected by the measures, and despite rumours in all countries, two months after the announcement, there still has been absolutely no concrete information or consultations with the trade unions or the EWC.

A joint coordinated European action by the trade unions is required and a decision has now been taken: In the first week of December, there will be actions at the national levels, with as climax, on 4 December, a rally at Unilever in Rotterdam. In addition, there will be a press conference to clarify the concerns regarding the ongoing situation.

More details will follow.
